NXP Semiconductors & Toradex: Next-Gen Edge Devices with i.MX 9

NXP Semiconductors and Toradex have joined forces to deliver a comprehensive platform for secure, intelligent edge devices built on the i.MX 9 processor family. As an NXP Platinum Partner since 2014, Toradex brings its proven System-on-Module expertise and Torizon software ecosystem to NXP's global platform, accelerating time-to-market for engineers building connected industrial, medical, and robotics applications. Together, the two companies deliver a powerful, unified solution that addresses both performance and security demands of modern embedded design.

Security from the Start

The i.MX 9 family establishes hardware-rooted trust through NXP's EdgeLock Secure Enclave, integrated cryptographic acceleration, and Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC). These silicon-level capabilities directly address the Essential Cybersecurity Requirements of the EU Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) — covering secure boot, encrypted firmware installation, device attestation, and vulnerability recovery across the full device lifecycle. With full application of the CRA required by December 2027, the i.MX 9 family gives engineers the hardware foundation to comply without redesigning their security architecture.

Scalable Performance Across the i.MX 9 Portfolio

The i.MX 9 family scales seamlessly from cost-sensitive industrial controllers to high-performance AI vision systems. The i.MX 91 delivers a compact, headless single-core solution for IoT gateways and smart sensors, while the i.MX 93 adds a dual Cortex-A55 configuration with an Arm® Ethos™ U-65 microNPU (0.5 TOPS) for AI-enabled HMIs and connected IPCs. At the top of the range, the i.MX 95 features up to six Cortex-A55 cores and the eIQ Neutron NPU delivering up to 8 eTOPS, enabling demanding workloads such as object detection, predictive maintenance, and on-device generative AI. Toradex offers all three processors across multiple pin-compatible SoM families — Verdin, Aquila, SMARC, Lino, and OSM — allowing engineers to scale performance without redesigning a third-party carrier board.

Seamless Integration with Torizon

TorizonOS is a ready-to-use industrial embedded Linux distribution built with security in mind and optimized for i.MX 9-based modules. Paired with TorizonCloud, it delivers automotive-grade OTA updates, secure offline patching, remote access, and device monitoring — all from a centralized dashboard. The Torizon Vulnerability Manager continuously scans upstream CVE databases, provides actionable SBOMs with every release, and reduces false positives by 50–70% through expert triage — directly supporting CRA vulnerability-handling obligations. Development is streamlined through support for Python, Rust, C/C++, .NET, and Visual Studio Code.

Building the Future Together

This collaboration between NXP and Toradex is designed to grow alongside the demands of the edge computing market. The combined NXP and Toradex ecosystem — spanning silicon security, NPU acceleration, software containers, and fleet management — positions engineers to build products that are fast, secure, and ready for what comes next. Stay tuned for the continued expansion of i.MX 9 platform support, new SoM families, and deeper integration across the Torizon ecosystem.
