Electrical Vehicle AC Chargers

Littelfuse provides a wide range of products that are suitable for Electric Vehicle AC Chargers. Although simpler in nature compared to DC chargers, AC charging stations safely deliver AC power from the electrical grid into the vehicle. Due to space and weight constraints in the vehicle, on-board chargers and AC charging stations are typically limited to lower amounts of power (22kW or less), which means charging time is slow – taking several hours. These systems also rely on a vehicle’s on-board charger to enable the conversion of AC power from the grid into DC power to charge the vehicle’s battery. It’s critical that proper measures are taken to safeguard both the charger and vehicle.

Off-Board Charger Sub-Unit Power Converters

Littelfuse Off-Board Charger Sub-Unit Power Converters are required for DC charging stations capable of charging to 80% SOC in under 30 minutes. These fast-charging applications require modular power converters, which can be paralleled to cater to different power levels, thereby enabling fast charging. The most critical parameters are energy density and system efficiency. A sub-unit power converter in a DC charging station consists of an AC/DC power stage and DC/DC power stage integrated into the charging station.

AC/DC Power Supply

Littelfuse AC/DC Power Supply is a commonly used building block in electronic designs. The components in these power supply building blocks need to be reliable and long-lasting, and Littelfuse offers a range of products that fit those requirements. This portfolio of components covers overcurrent and overvoltage protection, the power stage, and output protection. Typical applications for Littelfuse AC/DC Power Supply products include automotive, solar, industrial, manufacturing, and more.

ESD Protection Solutions

Littelfuse provides a wide range of products that protect components from ESD threats. ESD threats are extremely fast, low-energy events that can wreak havoc on electronic equipment. Trends in reduced chip protection and harsher end-user environments are requiring the need for enhanced protection solutions. Littelfuse produces varistors, suppressors, indicators, and more so users can find the right protection to ensure the long-term reliable operation of applications.

Intelligent Outlet Solutions

Littelfuse Intelligent Outlet Solutions components feature smart outlets and light dimmers that are controlled through apps or virtual assistance. The Littelfuse Intelligent Outlet Applications product line includes PICO® II 473 Slo-Blo® Fuses, UltraMOV 14mm Varistors, SJ SCR Switching Thyristors, Thyristor Triacs, IX4340 Gate Drivers, and 650V X2 MOSFETs. The intelligent outlets plug into or replace traditional outlets and allow users to control what is plugged into them through an app or virtual assistance. The smart light dimmers are also remotely controlled. Instead of diverting energy from the light bulb into a resistor, the modern light bulb circuit is switched off many times per second around the fluctuation of household alternating current for efficiency.

TMOV Thermally Protected Varistors

Littelfuse TMOV Thermally Protected Varistors are radially leaded metal oxide varistors (MOVs) with a thermally activated element designed to open during overheating. The integrated thermal element and the enclosure design work together to facilitate surge-protection module compliance to UL1449. These performance capabilities of Littelfuse TMOV varistors serve cord or permanently connected applications. These Littelfuse varistors offer quick thermal response due to the proximity of the thermal element to the MOV body. This integrated configuration provides the added benefit of lower inductance than most discrete solutions.

Smart Metering Solutions

Littelfuse Smart Metering Solutions help designers implement more reliable and safer smart meters. Littelfuse solutions for smart meters allow designers to bring Internet of Things technology to the key functions of a smart metering system.

Solutions for Motor Drives & Soft Starters

Littelfuse and IXYS Solutions for Industrial Motor Drives and Soft Starters offer protection and control components to help improve motor life and energy efficiency in industrial applications. Variable frequency drives (VFDs) control AC motor speed and torque by varying motor input voltage and frequency. Soft starters offer smooth start and stop operation for a motor. VFDs and soft starters work on the same principles, but they employ different architectures and serve different applications. VFDs can be programmed to vary the speed of the motor based on flow, pressure, and other factors. VFDs are used in elevators, escalators, crushers, mixers, and more. Soft starters get bypassed by a contractor overload circuit as a motor reaches its full speed. Soft starters are ideal for conveyors, pumps, and other belt-driven applications. These Littelfuse and IXYS motor drives and soft starters conform to global and North American safety standards.

Varistors

Littelfuse Varistors are protective devices that offer several important features, such as overvoltage protection, peak current ratings from 20A to 70,000A, and peak energy ratings from 0.01J to 10,000J. The mounting options serve a wide range of applications. Littelfuse Varistors also offer many form factor and protection ranges, rugged cost-effective protection, thermal protection options, and RoHS compliance.

Electrical Vehicle DC Fast Chargers

DC charging stations are designed to convert the electrical grid’s AC power into DC power that can then be fed directly into a vehicle’s battery system for fast charging – in 30 minutes or less. Because the conversion from AC to DC power is being done in the charging station, these units can provide higher levels of power (50kW to 350kW and beyond) to the vehicle compared to AC charging stations. Working with tens to hundreds of kilowatts of power, efficient conversion, reliability of the system, and user safety are critical.

TMOV34S Thermally Protected Varistors

Littelfuse TMOV®34S Thermally Protected Varistors consist of a 34mm square-format varistor element (MOV) with an integral thermally activated element. This element is designed to open in the event of overheating caused by abnormal overvoltage or limited current conditions. These devices have a high peak current rating to 40kA. An option of the TMOV34S series is a "monitor" lead, which may be connected to signaling circuity to indicate if the MOV has been disconnected from the circuit. Littelfuse TMOV34S Thermally Protected Varistors offer quick thermal response due to the close proximity of the integrated thermal element to the MOV body. The integrated configuration also offers lower inductance than most discrete solutions, resulting in improved clamping performance to fast overvoltage transients. Typical applications include SPD products, AC panel-protection modules, uninterruptable power supplies (UPS), inverters, and AC/DC power supplies.
